If you had ears in the '90s/early aughts, 5 Seconds Of Summer 's latest track, 'She's Kinda Hot,' probably stirred up all kinds of memories -- it basically sounds exactly like a jam that would have come up after 'All Star' and before 'What's My Age Again' on your local radio's countdown of hits. And that's a good thing.

Sure, the song totally sounds like a throwback track -- with lyrical nods to bands like Green Day, The Offspring and Bad Brains -- but, what, exactly, are the dudes tapping into with their new 'heavy as hell' (as Michael Clifford calls it ) track?

We hit up our favorite musicologist, Joe Bennett , for the scoop:

  1. 'Day Tripper,' The Beatles... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwmtNk_Yb2Q

'The song opens with a arpeggio guitar riff in the key of E, played on the two bass strings of the instrument. It's a variation on the 1950s rock 'n' roll walking bass line, and this type of riff appears in countless well-known songs, including 'Day Tripper'...'

  2. 'My Girl,' The Temptations... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IUG-9jZD-g
  3. And 'Chuck E's In Love,' Rickie Lee Jones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLu387iIBmM
  4. 'Rock Around The Clock,' Bill Haley... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgdufzXvjqw

'Clearly the production shows off 5SOS' rockier side, and it's worth noting that Michael and Ashton co-wrote it with John Feldmann (an experienced producer who's co-written with Blitz Kids and Panic! at the Disco) and the Madden brothers (Good Charlotte). But deep down, it's structurally quite a traditional song. Apart from a slightly shorter first verse, most of the song is based around a 12-bar blues, a chord sequence that has underpinned thousands of older songs, including 'Rock Around The Clock'...'

  5. 'Stuck In The Middle With You,' Stealers Wheel... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DohRa9lsx0Q
  6. 'In The Summertime,' Mungo Jerry... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvUQcnfwUUM
