' Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation ,' the fifth film in the Tom Cruise action series, proves that the franchise still has plenty of fight left in it, with no signs of slowing down. It's one of the most entertaining Ethan Hunt adventures yet, and here's why:
- The Plane! The Plane!
Paramount You've seen it on the poster. You've seen it in trailers. Tom Cruise is going to strap himself to the side of an airplane and ride it up into the sky. It's an insane idea. It's insane execution. They stick the landing on this one — well, no spoilers on the ACTUAL landing, but you get the picture — but there's at least one very big surprise involved with the scene that I certainly didn't see coming.
- After The Plane Takes Off…
Paramount …the spy games begin. More so than any other ' Mission: Impossible ' film since the original, 'Rogue Nation' feels like a true espionage thriller. There are plenty of action scenes in here, but they're overshadowed by the shadows, the double-dealing, the twisting-and-turning head games the main players play with one another. It's one of the headiest and most suspenseful movies in the entire franchise.

Paramount I mean, it is what it is. Five movies into the series, Tom Cruise has the Ethan Hunt thing on lock. He's firmly at home in the pantheon of today's great spies like James Bond, Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer. If he wasn't already at that level before, then he absolutely is by the end of 'Rogue Nation.'

Paramount Beyond Ethan Hunt, there are two key figures in the 'M:I' franchise: Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell. Ethan's two BFFs have very big roles here in 'Rogue Nation,' Benji especially, and they're as great as ever. Oh, and Jeremy Renner is back as Brandt, too. He's fine!
- Meet Ilsa
Paramount Rebecca Ferguson absolutely steals the show as operative Ilsa Faust in 'Rogue Nation,' in what's essentially her mainstream debut. She's a mostly unknown quantity, except for all you big 'White Queen' fans out there, but after this, she ought to be right up at the top of the list of the great action heroes of the moment. Ilsa isn't just the best character in 'Rogue Nation,' but one of the very best characters in the entire series, wholly capable of headlining her own spinoff. Get hyped.

Paramount The erstwhile Jack Donaghy stars as the head of the Central Intelligence Agency. Enough said.
- Putting the Sin in Syndicate
Paramount The villains of 'Rogue Nation' are shadow operatives the likes of which Ethan has never seen. The so-called Syndicate wastes no time making big moves against both Ethan and the IMF, in an extremely clever and haunting riff on one of the most enduring aspects of 'Mission: Impossible' early on in the movie. You will want to see these guys brought to justice, in a very big way.

Paramount An instant classic, and one of the very best sequences in any of the five 'Mission: Impossible' movies. You will love it.
- More Please Now
Paramount Among the movie's many accomplishments, 'Rogue Nation' confirms the health of 'Mission: Impossible' as a franchise. These movies aren't reinventing the wheel on anything, but man, they are fun. Cruise is at the top of his game as Hunt, he's backed up by a fantastic crew, and there's so much potential for further outings in the series. Let's get that sixth movie off the ground and into the air as soon as we can, please and thanks.
