Agents S H I E L
'I wouldn't say I'm a true believer,' the Clairvoyant tells Agent Coulson as he reveals his true purposes. 'Let's just say I felt the wind changing direction and swung my sail.'
That's right: no fake-outs, no take-backs, no do-overs. 'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' finally revealed the identity of the Clairvoyant , and it's a jaw-dropper — although what happened before and after the Clairvoyant was unmasked featured even bigger shocks.
Read on for everything that happened on last night's 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,' titled 'Turn, Turn, Turn.'
Final warning: Major 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' and 'Captain America' spoilers are ahead.
To begin with, if you didn't see this movie:
You were probably mighty confused about what happened during the episode. At long last, 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' tied directly into one of the Marvel movies; if you hadn't seen 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' already, you know all of the big plot points now.
S.H.I.E.L.D. is down, and HYDRA is on the rise — and the Clairvoyant is one of the heads of the snake. But it's not this woman:
Indeed, Victoria Hand turns out to be one of the few S.H.I.E.L.D. agents actually on the level. Instead, it's one of Coulson's oldest friends:
Don't recognize that guy? Here, a closer look.
It can't be...
Sorry, just needed to Hulk out there for a second. But yes, it's true. The Clairvoyant has been revealed, and it's Agent John Garrett.
Garrett joined forces with HYDRA not because he believes in their cause, but because he learned about their infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D., and decided to back the winning side. That makes his participation in the coup all the more devastating for Coulson, who goes way, way back with Garrett.
But there's something worse than Garrett's betrayal. We learn that someone on The Bus is working with him and HYDRA as well. And it's not...
...Melinda May. She's been spying on Coulson's team, yes, but on behalf of the 'late' director Nick Fury . Instead, it's...
...Agent Grant Ward, who ends the episode by killing a whole bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (including Hand) and rescuing the captured Garrett in the process. And just minutes after Skye-Ward went from casual flirtation to legitimate date-making and kissy-face! Uncool!
Ward's HYDRA allegiance makes sense, when you think back on him shooting the fake Clairvoyant in cold blood last week. Garrett was his superior officer many moons ago, too, so their collusion goes way back.
Unless Ward is simply taking extreme measures to get in close with Garrett, and topple both the Clairvoyant's Centipede group and HYDRA in the process. That outcome requires a whole lot of wishful thinking and a very likely tragic ending for Ward, but it's not an impossible outcome. Either way, Ward's story isn't likely to end in happy-feels, not after this.
What did you think of the latest 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' episode? Where do you think it's all heading?
