Big Hero 6 Officially Gets A Sequel, But Not As You'd Expect

Big Hero 6 Officially Gets Sequel

It's hard to believe we first say Baymax on the big screen two years ago this November. Now, after lots of talk and whispers on the Internet, Disney's Big Hero 6 is getting a sequel. But, of course, there's one major catch: The sequel will be a TV series on Disney XD.

The series will premiere in 2017, so we still have a ways to go before we're reunited with Baymax and his squad.

Now, if you're one of those people (a.k.a. me) who think old Disney is way better than new Disney, let's stop for a second and find out what the sitch is.

Disney

It turns out, creative team members Mark McCorkle and Robert Schooley — the creators of a little thing called Kim Possible — will be reunited with their Kim Possible colleague Nick Filippi, who will act as executive producer and supervising director on the series. The show will be old Disney meets new Disney, which sounds like a win-win for both generations, millennials and founders alike.

According to a press release from Disney, the show will pick up 'immediately following the events in the feature film, and [will continue] the adventures and friendship of 14-year-old tech genius Hiro and his compassionate, cutting-edge robot Baymax.' Oh, and of course pals Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Fred, and Go Go are coming back for more shenanigans.

Disney

'We are thrilled to have the opportunity to further develop these characters into a world class animated series -- full of fun, action and the kind of endearing storytelling that only Mark, Bob -- and Baymax -- can deliver,' Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide, told Comic Book.

So it's not the movie sequel we've been hoping and praying for, but it doesn't mean that project is kaput just yet. Last year, MTV News spoke to Génesis Rodriguez (Honey Lemon) about a potential Big Hero 6 sequel.

'We spoke during Oscar night and were like, 'Well, maybe now that we got the Oscar, this might happen,'' Rodriguez admitted. 'There’s nothing definitive. There’s talks of something happening. We just don’t know what yet.'

Maybe this is the final result of those talks, but maybe not. Either way, we're just stoked we get to see Baymax again!
