Calvin Harris Reveals Who Convinced Him Sing My Way
When Calvin Harris dropped the single My Way last week, fans were shocked for a couple different reasons. First of all, it definitely seemed to take a page from the Taylor Swift School of Writing Songs About Exes with its lyrical content (though he later claimed it actually isn’t about his former relationship with Swift). But more surprisingly, the song featured lead vocals from Harris himself.
The Scottish DJ previously sang on 2014’s Summer, but on his subsequent hits, he’s handed off vocal duties to collaborators like Rihanna and Ellie Goulding. So what made him decide to pick up the mic again? Apparently, all it took was a little convincing from Pharrell .
[There’s] only so far you can go with a voice like mine, and there’s a limit to the range, Harris said in a Beats 1 interview with Zane Lowe. Actually, Pharrell told me something about hitting the notes. Occasionally people try to persuade me to sing again and he was one of those people.
He said ... it’s not about hitting the notes, it’s about getting the emotion and the feeling and the character across, he added. Once he said that to me, I started looking at myself [and] my voice differently because I was like, ‘Hmm, someone like him picked up on that.’
So, does this mean we can expect to hear Harris sing more often?
Yeah, I'm trying to work hard to do it more, he said. Because also, in tandem with that, there's a lot of DJ producers, and I look at myself and I think, ‘What do I have to offer that they don’t? What can I do that they can’t?’ Because you know, we all pretty much do the same thing.
True, but all those other DJs don’t have such rich songwriting material stemming from a famous breakup. Just sayin’, Cal, you could spill all the tea from the time all hell broke loose . We wouldn’t mind.
