There are plenty of lingering questions from the ' Guardians of the Galaxy ' trailer . Who are the villains? What's that orb Peter Quill ( Chris Pratt ) is picking up at the beginning? And what the heck is that song playing on his headphones?
That song, if you didn't know, is 'Hooked On A Feeling.' Originally written in 1968 by Mark James and performed by B.J. Thomas, it didn't really become popular until Swedish pop group Blue Swede covered it in 1974. The cover added the distinctive 'Ooga-Chaka' intro, and the song became a number one hit in the United States.
And though it's possible the song might once again hit a resurgence thanks to 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' this wouldn't be the first time it has had a second life:
In 1992 Quentin Tarantino included Blue Swede's version of 'Hooked on a Feeling' on the 'Reservoir Dogs' soundtrack. The song might not have been as ironically used as 'Stuck In The Middle With You,' which accompanied a particularly hard to watch torture scene; but it still stood out among the carefully curated seven music tracks on the record. Though the disc wasn't as big a hit as Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction,' it's continued to be a cult favorite among collectors and brought 'Hooked on a Feeling' back to the public's eye.
Possibly the biggest, and some might say most annoying use of the song came in 1998 on FOX's 'Ally McBeal.' House one-man-band Vonda Shepard covered Blue Swede's version of the song, which played simultaneously with the title character's frequent hallucinations of internet meme Dancing Baby. The CGI animated baby, along with 'Hooked on a Feeling' showed up everywhere over the next year or two. It soon wore out it's welcome.
That wasn't the end of 'Hooked on a Feeling,' though. In 1999, living internet meme David Hasslehoff covered the song for his album of the same name. The track peaked at 36 on the Australian charts, with the album peaking at 49 in Australia, 41 in Switzerland.
'Guardians of the Galaxy'
That brings us right back to 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' After a 17-year period of dormancy, 'Hooked on a Feeling' is back in the public consciousness with its prominent use in the trailer. As of this writing it hasn't charted on iTunes or Spotify, but it's only a matter of time. You can't resist the 'Ooga-Chakas.' Just try...
'Guardians of the Galaxy' hits theaters on August 1.
