Heres Real Story Behind Troy Aves First Week Sales

Troy Ave was trending on Twitter Thursday (Jun. 11) after publications reported that his latest album, Major Without A Deal , sold less than 5,000 units in its first week. The rapper was being ridiculed for perceived low sales figures, but as Billboard reported today, those bashing Ave were operating on incomplete data.

What Needs To Be Known About This Album's Release?

The Brooklyn MC's star-studded project was released as a digital LP Friday through BSB Records. It sold 4,000 units for the week ending Sunday - according to Nielsen - giving it just three days of sales in its first week. Most albums are released on Tuesdays, giving them six days of sales to tally up. The album's first full week of sales won't be known until Wednesday of next week.

Why Was It Released Early Online?

According to a rep from Empire Recordings- which handled distribution for the project - the album's early digital release was attributed to Troy's high-profile appearance at Hot 97's 'Summer Jam' on Sunday.

'[He] wanted his fans to be able to get the album prior to that show,' the rep told Billboard . 'Thus, we released the digital version on June 5th and then on June 9th, the physical copies were released.'

What About Those Low Physical Album Sales Reports?

Some reports said Troy sold approximately 30 physical copies of Major Without A Deal in its first week, a huge sticking point for those clowning Ave online. However, there's more to that figure, too.

Physical copies of the album weren't in stores until Tuesday of this week. Those figures aren't reflected in any reports yet. Physical copies purchased before Tuesday were sold by retailers who violated the street date. A majority of the data concerning physical sales won't be available until Wednesday of next week also. That's when the album's first full week of sales (both digital and physical) will be unveiled.
