Heres Why Shonda Rhimeshadto Kill Off Mcdreamy Ingreys Anatomy
By all accounts, Patrick Dempsey 's Derek Shepherd lasted a pretty long time on ' Grey's Anatomy ,' at least compared to some of the other, less fortunate Season 1 alums. He survived an exploding body bomb, an earthquake, being shot by a mass murderer who had but one name on his hit list: his. Plus, there was that plane crash that killed his sister-in-law and his best friend and cost another surgeon her leg.
Instead it was a simple car crash and a minor brush of ER incompetence at another facility that ultimately took the miracle-handed man. And even though we've had months, there are still those among us who firmly believe that the show just cannot not be the same without the presence of McDreamy and his luscious hair wandering the halls -- and cruising the elevators -- of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. In other words: WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?
So, when Shonda Rhimes hit the Television Critics Association presser on Tuesday (August 4), the showrunner had some serious 'splaining to do. But, according to her, she actually took down McDreamy so that he could remain Doctor McDreamy in our minds forevermore. Because otherwise, love was going to be dead instead of him.
'The decision to have Derek die the way that he did was not a difficult one in the sense of what were the options? Either Derek was going to walk out on Meredith and leave her high and dry and what was that going to mean? That the love was not true, the thing we’d said for 11 years was a lie, for me was untenable,' Rhimes told the crowd . 'Meredith and Derek’s love had to remain Meredith and Derek’s love. So as painful as it was for me as a storyteller … the only way to preserve what felt true for me was for Derek to have to die.'
If you say so. Harrumph.ABC
Apparently, Meredith is going to be living with her surviving sisters in Season 12, but she's not exactly going to be 'dating and having a whole life' now that she's single again.
'She’s not interested in all that. She’s pondering, ‘Is there a second life there or are the best years behind you?'' Rhimes explained .
Oh man. Seattle is going to be gloomier than EVER when 'Grey's' returns on Sept. 24.
