Marvels Agents S
'Word of advice: stop digging, and stay away from that girl. Wherever she goes, death follows.'
That's just one of the key lines of dialogue uttered on last night's memorable episode of 'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Incidentally, we have a similar statement of our own to make:
If you missed last night's episode, word of advice: stop digging, and stay away from this article. Whatever you read next, SPOILERS follow.
Still with us? Good — because the Skye is falling, and we need to talk about it.
On the latest episode of 'S.H.I.E.L.D.,' titled 'Seeds,' Agents Phil Coulson and Melinda May traveled to Mexico City to track down a lead on Skye's true origin. There, they learned from a long-missing S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Richard Lumley that more than 20 years ago, a group of agents traveled to a small village to track down an 0-8-4 — an object of unknown origin. The entire village and several agents were slaughtered, the only survivor being the blood-covered 0-8-4 — an 'object' that turned out to be a baby girl, who turns out to be Skye.
Lumley and his partner vowed to keep Skye safe, putting her into foster care and issuing an order to keep her moving from foster family to foster family to foster family, all in an effort to keep her off the grid. The plan worked, obviously, as Skye's still alive and well — but Lumley's partner, and other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, suffered gruesome deaths to preserve the secret. Lumley himself entered hiding to avoid a similar fate.
By the end of the episode, Coulson tells Skye about her secret past, and she takes it rather well — certainly better than how Coulson handled news of his revival last week . Of course, now that we know Skye's secret — that she was considered an 0-8-4 as an infant — new questions emerge.
For starters, what's Skye's deal? What about her makes her an 0-8-4? Is she gifted with super-powers? If so, she hasn't exhibited much in that direction, other than the power to be very charming and get under Grant Ward's skin on a weekly basis — and, of course, her tech-savvy.
Perhaps there's a clue there. Between the extreme technological measures S.H.I.E.L.D. took to keep Coulson alive, plus the appearance of cybernetic-enhanced soldiers like Akela Amadour, perhaps Skye is just one of the many 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' characters with a technologically-advanced secret. After all, we already know a future-cyborg is on his way in the form of Bill Paxton as John Garrett . What's one more potential robot between us friends?
Regardless, even with some answers in place, it's clear that Skye's story is just beginning. And it looks like there might be some new answers on the way very soon: Next week's episode not only contains a much-hyped Stan Lee appearance, but also an 'astonishing series-changing final act.' Will that series-changer include more details about Coulson's resurrection? About Skye's secret past? Or something else entirely? We'll find out when you do, true believers.
