Suicide Squad Gets Dragged
Picture this: You’re an electro-rap duo out of South Africa who’s made a name for yourselves on the strength of your outlandish, surreal, totally unhinged, apocalypse-invoking live performances. Your look — a smattering of tattoos, bleached hair, and bold statements made with makeup, black-out contacts, and gnarly teeth — is just as uniquely yours as the music you make. A prominent director reaches out to you, an apparent fan, and eventually you see your style blown up on the big screen and dressing the characters of one of the biggest movies out this summer.
According to Die Antwoord , that’s their current predicament, as they allege that David Ayer ripped off their likeness for Suicide Squad .
Taking to Instagram on Wednesday (August 10) with a brief clip juxtaposing shots of Die Antwoord’s Ninja and Yolandi Visser and Suicide Squad ’s Joker and Harley Quinn, Yolandi calls out Ayer directly for jockin their look and lays out their communication with the film’s director, even bringing Cara Delevingne and Jared Leto into the damning mix.
yes David Ayer u jockin our style, she writes. callin ninja up before your movie came our pretendin 2b down, so it looks OK when u bite our black & white graf style & our opening sequence to umshiniwam & an all da lil tiny details u nibbeld dat other people wont see but we notice. Cara & Jared told us how much u were talkin abt us on set but u never asked our permision to rip us off. The frames Yolandi shared in her post prove her point, in that it’s difficult to see the placement of the Joker’s tats alongside Ninja’s and not note the similarities.
She goes on to bash Ayer for courting the duo and having the balls to invite Ninja to the Suicide Squad premiere without prepping him for what he was about to see and even hurls a dis an unsuspecting rapper ’s way, too: U shud start a crew called:,‘im a fake fuck’ ask kanye if he wants to join u.
Ayer and Warner Brothers have yet to comment on Die Antwoord’s accusations. (Needless to say, Die Antwoord did not contribute a track to the Suicide Squad soundtrack.)
