Yay New Katy Perry Album Is Coming Sooner Than We Thought

Oh, Katy Perry , how we’ve missed thee. Sure, the recent news about her concert movie coming to Netflix in June made us happy-cry about the chance to watch her slay on stage whenever we want. And we’ve been fawning over her recent style stuns, like her bold Met Gala haircut and her on-fleek bleached eyebrows .

But we’ve been seriously cravin’ some new tunes from KP, which is why today marks a celebratory occasion — we finally have a clue about when to expect her fifth studio album!

During a press conference in Singapore this week, Katy’s manager, Steven Jensen, announced that Katy plans to release her next album by 2016.

It’s sort of an ambiguous comment, and while we’d love to imagine that by 2016 means the album will drop at exactly 12:01 a.m. on January 1, 2016, it seems like a bit of a stretch. After all, Katy doesn’t wrap the last leg of her Prismatic World Tour until October, which doesn’t leave a whole lot of time to record a whole album before the first of the year.

In any case, one thing’s for sure: this next KP album will likely be a big turning point in the 30-year-old’s career. In recent interviews, she’s been vocal about wanting to change up her sound, telling the AP , It’s important for me to maybe start reinventing myself. Because I can’t keep topping myself because I’ll just combust at some point.

With that sentiment in mind, here are four things we want to see on her next album:

  1. Katy going full-on country. Giphy

Remember when Katy teamed up with country princess Kacey Musgraves last year for a CMT concert where they tackled each other’s songs? That ish was AMAZING, and proved Katy’s raspy voice pairs perfectly with folksy, stripped-down arrangements. Taylor Swift proved the country-to-pop crossover is totally doable (and also wildly successful), and we’d love to see Katy make the reverse happen.

  2. Speaking of Taylor...hold your fire, KP. Giphy

Yes, we’ve all heard the rumors claiming that Taylor penned Bad Blood about Katy. It’s undoubtedly tempting for Katy to fire back with a scathing retort of her own, but we’re kinda hoping she leaves this so-called rivalry in the dust and takes the high road.

  3. With that in mind, give us some maturity. Giphy

Yes, we love the drunken antics detailed in Last Friday Night as much as the next person, but you gotta remember: Katy is 30 years old. If ever there was a time to prove she has the chops for a long-lasting career, it’s now. That’s exactly why we’d love to see her songwriting explore darker territory with more mature themes. This isn’t to say we don’t want more empowering and party-starting anthems à la Roar and Firework — we definitely do! — but we’d also appreciate some more complexity on Katy’s next release. Remember how touching and poignant her performance at this year’s Grammys was? It showed off a super classy side of Ms. Perry, and it was hella impressive. More of that, please.

  4. MORE MISSY! Tumblr

Katy and Missy Elliott proved they’re a dangerously dynamic duo during their Super Bowl halftime performance earlier this year. We’ve been achin’ for some new Missy jams, and there’s absolutely no doubt these two would make magic happen in the studio if they decided to collaborate. Maybe they could whip up an ode to Left Shark? Free idea, guys.
