For almost four years, Zooey Deschanel has gifted us with one of the quirkiest and most relatable TV characters ever as Jess in New Girl. In the role, she’s come to personify the word adorkable (a blend of adorable and dorky, obvi) so much that it’s become her trademark descriptor. And honestly, it’s the perfect word for Jess’ bubbly, singsongy habits and endearing social ineptness.

'I don’t always identify, perhaps, with the way that I’m portrayed in certain public contexts. I try to stay away from that sort of thing,' Zooey said in an interview with The Huffington Post .

The 35-year-old went on to explain that the word adorkable isn’t really relevant to her because it was dreamed up for the New Girl marketing campaign.
'That was something that was calculated, you know what I mean? That was our marketing department at Fox and they did a really good job with our first season, but that's a word that describes the character that I play, not me, she said. I don’t personally have identification with that word myself.
Don’t worry; Zooey isn’t blasting the show or lamenting all the success it’s brought her. She (understandably) just wants to avoid being typecast and let people know she’s not a one-trick pony.

Obviously I'm grateful for all of the opportunities that I’ve had thus far, including 'New Girl,' but I don’t think I've ever met a person who knows me use that word to describe me, so it’s not of any consequence to me, she continued.
To prove her point, Zooey’s latest role is a far cry from her cutesy roommate antics on New Girl or her goofy, manic pixie dream girl persona in 500 Days Of Summer. Instead, she’s turned her attention to projects that show off her range as an actress, like The Driftless Area, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 18.
'I’m just kind of neutral -- I’m an entertainer, and I do different types of things to entertain people, but ultimately when I make a choice, I’m making that choice to challenge myself and do something that seems like it would be interesting, she said. That’s my philosophy.
In other news, Zooey doesn’t always wear glasses, red lipstick, and sundresses. Crazy!
